Alexander School is nestled in the heart of the historic Highland District in Shreveport, La. This school was built in 1912, and, given its age and the fact that is has been utilized as a school for children with mental and physical handicaps, was due for a renovation. Renovations of Alexander School consisted of a complete interior demolition and rebuild, as well as construction of new ADA male and female bathrooms with ceramic tile, and installation of handrails throughout the school. The plans for this project called for a hydraulic elevator, however, the plans failed to indicate a load
bearing wall, which was placed exactly where the elevator was to be installed! Despite this unforeseen difficulty, the elevator was installed, safely and successfully, and the project was finished on time and on specification.

Scope: Complete interior demolition and rebuild to bring school to ADA code
Completion Date: October 2003
Contract Cost: $790,137

Barksdale Air Force Base is one of the largest bases in our country’s military network. Named for Lt. Barksdale, this base was built on donated land, and has grown to cover over 22,000 acres. Barksdale is home to most of the B-52’s that the Department of Defense owns, so the necessity of a properly lit runway is of utmost importance. Due to the importance of having a full array of runway lighting, this project was implemented on an around-the-clock schedule. Even though the project was hampered by almost constant rain for the first week, within 12 days from the start of the demolition the new duct bank was installed and the runway lights were up and running.

This project entailed the demolition of a sizeable section of concrete runway, in order to replace an existing 12-way 4” duct bank with a new 9-way 4” duct bank. Approximately 10,000CF of concrete and 5,000CF of dirt were removed, in order to demolish the old duct bank and imbed the new one in concrete. New cable racks, along with medium voltage cables were installed in the new duct bank for runway markers and strobe circuits.

New fill was compacted above the duct bank, and covered with 650 FLEX concrete to a depth of 24”. When the concrete was finished setting, the entire area was power saw cut and washed to remove all the debris from the runway.

Scope: Replace Strobe Light and runway paving
Owner: Barksdale Air Force Base (USAF)
Architect: BAFB Engineering (Ms. Shirley) 318-456-6940
Completion Date: January 2002
Contract Cost: $255,000
Change Orders: None
Safety Record: Excellent
